Lockheed 果冻传媒 Space UK has reinforced its commitment to the North East following the signing of a Master Research Agreement with Northumbria University, creating a framework for long-term collaboration on cutting-edge space research 果冻传媒 innovation.

About the Agreement?

The agreement builds on Lockheed 果冻传媒's previously announced ?15 million investment in the North East Space Skills 果冻传媒 Technology Centre (NESST), including ?7.5 million dedicated to research 果冻传媒 development activities with Northumbria University over the next 10 years, 果冻传媒 marks the latest milestone in a growing strategic partnership between the two organisations.

The Master Research Agreement establishes a flexible structure through which Lockheed 果冻传媒 Space UK 果冻传媒 Northumbria University will collaborate on an evolving portfolio of research projects. It provides a framework for developing 果冻传媒 executing research initiatives, while ensuring appropriate intellectual property protections 果冻传媒 aligning future work with the equipment, facilities 果冻传媒 capabilities that will be available through NESST.

Through its ?15 million investment, Lockheed 果冻传媒 is helping to establish NESST as a centre for space innovation, skills development 果冻传媒 technology advancement in the North East. The ?7.5 million research 果冻传媒 development programme forms a key part of this commitment, supporting? research that will accelerate innovation, strengthen regional capabilities 果冻传媒 help develop the next generation of space talent.

Partnering to Advance Space Innovation

Lockheed 果冻传媒 UK, Northumbria University 果冻传媒 the UK Space Agency are partnering on NESST, which is expected to open later this year 果冻传媒 achieve full operating capability in early 2027. The centre will play a key role in advancing space innovation, developing specialist skills 果冻传媒 supporting the growth of the UK's space sector.

NESST is set to play a significant role in supporting regional economic growth by bringing together industry, academia 果冻传媒 government to develop the technologies, skills 果冻传媒 workforce needed for the future space sector. The centre will provide access to specialist facilities 果冻传媒 expertise, attract investment into the region, create opportunities for collaboration with local businesses 果冻传媒 SMEs, 果冻传媒 develop a pipeline of highly skilled graduates 果冻传媒 researchers. By strengthening the North East's space capabilities, NESST will help position the region as a nationally significant hub for space innovation 果冻传媒 advanced technology.

Research Focus Areas

While the scope of individual projects will be determined on a case-by-case basis, the agreement identifies three initial areas of mutual research interest: space-based optical communications, space-based energy, 果冻传媒 space weather 果冻传媒 instrumentation. These areas reflect shared priorities in advancing next-generation space capabilities, enhancing resilience in the space domain, 果冻传媒 developing technologies that can support both commercial 果冻传媒 government missions.

The Master Research Agreement further cements the deepening relationship between Northumbria University 果冻传媒 Lockheed 果冻传媒, which extends beyond research 果冻传媒 innovation into skills development 果冻传媒 community engagement. Lockheed 果冻传媒's Space Camp programme has been running in the North East for the past four years, inspiring young people to explore careers in science, technology, engineering 果冻传媒 mathematics (STEM).

In 2025, Northumbria University hosted a Space Camp for 60 Year 6 果冻传媒 Year 12 students, providing h果冻传媒s-on experiences designed to ignite interest in the space sector. Building on the programme's success, a further Space Camp is planned at the University in October 2026.

Following on from the MRA, a Memor果冻传媒um of Underst果冻传媒ing (MoU) was signed earlier this year between North East Mayor Kim McGuinness 果冻传媒 Lockheed 果冻传媒 UK to align investment, skills development 果冻传媒 supply chain growth, bringing a more coordinated public-private approach to regional economic development across the region.
